Dinosaurs!

It’s hard to come back from a vacation. Once I did, I had to work on that third playhouse. I’ve been told by lots of people who I should make them and sell them. I’ve only made three so far and each time, I’ve had done at least one window backwards. I realize this when I start putting it together and as I am about to flip the piece over I realize I’ve got it on the wrong side.

This playhouse was made for my cousin Evie. From what her mom and older sister say, she loves dinosaurs. My mom and I started getting some dinosaur themed fabric but our local fabric store was very limited. I find JoAnn’s to be very a good fabric store but mostly fleece. If I want any particular color or pattern, they have it. If I want something particular like t-shirt jersey knit, I’m better off finding it online and hoping it’s not paper-thin to the point of being a thread short of being a sheer. Since I was limited with that print, I went with striped fabric in white and blue for the base. In fact, the blue and white fabric was made from recycled bed sheets. What you don’t see if the blue floral print on white that is the base of the roof. I picked up some turquoise blue that is in the dinosaur fabric to be for the windows and curtains.

I made this one similar to Izze’s playhouse with the ruffles. I had only gotten three different dinosaur fabrics. I used two of them solely for the ruffled roof. The other was for the box.  I wanted to add more to the theme so I used a projector and a scrap of one of the prints and traced a few of the dinosaurs. Each wall has one dinosaur. I tried keeping it close to the way the print looks but also wanted it a bit rustic so the stitches are not straight and eyes are roughly sewn.

The third fabric was for the storage box. I used an orange solid fabric for the lining of the box. Instead of ties for the upper corners, I sewn them together. I also gave up the Velcro closure and used ribbon ties. I had some grosgrain ribbon that matched the color of the turquoise dinosaurs and made a great contrast to the fabric which had a brown background.

I’m looking forward to Evie receiving this playhouse and hope she loves playing in it. Izze enjoyed checking it out and asked when she could play in it with Evie. Hopefully, it will happen soon.
